COIDA stands for the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act. It is a South African law that provides for compensation to employees who get injured or contract diseases at their workplace. The act applies to all employers and employees in South Africa, with a few exceptions.

If you are an employer, you must register for COIDA if:

  1. You employ one or more workers: If you have at least one employee, you are required to register with the Compensation Fund.
  2. You are involved in any type of work: COIDA covers all types of work, except for some specific categories like domestic workers, members of the South African National Defense Force (SANDF), and members of the South African Police Service (SAPS).
  3. You have an establishment in South Africa: If your business operates within the borders of South Africa, you are obligated to register with COIDA.

Registration with COIDA is crucial because it ensures that your employees are protected and compensated in case of work-related injuries or diseases. Failure to register can result in penalties and may also leave you liable for compensation claims.
