Who should register with Coida?

Last Updated on September 21, 2023 by ufiling

Coida stands for the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act. It is a South African law that provides for compensation for workers who are injured, contract diseases, or die as a result of their work-related activities. The act applies to all employers and workers who fall under its scope.

In South Africa, it is mandatory for employers to register with the Compensation Fund under the Coida Act if they employ one or more workers. This includes full-time, part-time, and casual workers. The act covers employees in all sectors, including domestic workers and workers employed by municipalities.

Self-employed individuals, sole proprietors, and independent contractors are not required to register with Coida. However, they may choose to voluntarily register to be covered by the compensation scheme.

It is important for employers to comply with Coida to ensure that their workers are protected in case of work-related injuries or diseases. Registration with the Compensation Fund ensures that employees have access to medical treatment, compensation for temporary or permanent disability, and compensation for dependents in the event of a work-related death.

Please note that laws and regulations may change over time, so it’s essential to verify the current requirements with official sources or legal experts. If there have been any updates or changes to Coida since my last update, I would not be aware of them.
