Yes, your Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) money in South Africa does expire after a certain period of time.
According to the UIF Act, any unused UIF benefits expire after 12 months from the date on which you became entitled to receive the benefits. This means that if you do not claim your UIF benefits within 12 months of becoming entitled to them, you will lose your right to claim those benefits.
For example, if you became unemployed in January 2022 and were entitled to receive UIF benefits, but you did not claim those benefits by January 2023, your benefits will expire, and you will no longer be able to claim them.
It is important to note that you can only claim UIF benefits for a maximum of 238 days (or eight months), even if you have not used all of your entitlement during that time. For example, if you claimed UIF benefits for four months and found employment, you will not be able to claim the remaining four months of your entitlement at a later stage.
